2018 Student Recognition 

Fremont, Ohio, April 25, 2018 – On April 24, 2017, Terra State Community College announced winners of the Student Recognition Awards at the annual banquet held at the Ronald L. Neeley Conference and Hospitality Center.  Categories and winners are:

Fremont Rotary Student of the YearJuan Morales, originally from Texas, now resides in Fremont.  Juan plans to enter the Registered Nurse program at Terra State after earning his biology degree with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.  He has excelled in the classroom, being named to the Dean’s List several times and receiving the Michael Dodson Memorial Endowment Scholarship.  Outside the classroom, Juan is very active in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society serving as the Northwest District Representative for the Ohio Region. 

Student Employee of the YearDavid Dixon lives in the Fremont area and is a Business Management student at Terra State.  David is Terra State’s Intramural Sports Coordinator and Student Activities Assistant.  

Leadership Award – Paula Bryant of Tiffin will graduate this May from Terra State with a degree in Health Information Technology.  She is the President of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Vice President of the Health Information Technology Student Organization.  Paula is also active in Girl Scouts and Tiffin Middle School’s PTO. 

Perseverance Award – There are two recipients of this award.  Marah Overmyer of Fremont has faced many obstacles while a student at Terra State.  The Hospitality Management student was in her second semester as a full time student while working full time when her father was diagnosed with cancer.  With Marah’s father in remission, she found out that she was expecting twins.  At week twenty-two of the pregnancy, she was told one of her son’s, Brantley, had a heart defect.  Marah gave birth to twins on November 1, 2016 and after his first surgery, Brantley passed away after seven weeks and five days.  Marah will graduate this spring with her associate degree. 

Ned McElfresh of Clyde is a nursing major at Terra State, but also a member of the United States Army and Navy.  While pursuing his degree, Ned has stayed on active duty.  He was deployed fully twice and partially twice and had to put his studies on hold each time.  Upon returning from duty, Ned had to re-acclimate himself to both civilian and student life and had to repeat courses due to his lapses in training. 

All-Ohio Academic Team – Paula Bryant of Tiffin has been named 1st Team All-Ohio Academic and a 2018 Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar.  She is a Health Information Technology student. 

Traci Mahler has been named 3rd Team All-Ohio Academic.  Traci is from Lakeside-Marblehead and a Business Management student.

2017-2018Commencement SpeakerRhonda Rose of Tiffin holds an Associate in Health Information Technology from Terra State.  She will earn a second degree in Medical Assisting this spring.  

Student Organization of the Year – Terra State’s Student Nursing Organization (SNA) has impacted its members and community this past year.  The organization has raised funds for many causes including assisting Puerto Rican women in returning to their home to help their families after the devastating hurricane.  SNA has also collected toiletries for the Fremont Liberty Center, volunteered at the Alexa Brown Memorial 5K and beautifying area highways by collecting debris.
