FREMONT – The Terra Choral Society begins its new season with an opening rehearsal on Tuesday, September 4. This rehearsal is an opportunity for those interested in singing with the group to come and experience the choir and meet its musical staff. Singers interested in joining may register at the rehearsal.
The Terra Choral Society (TCS) serves as the community/student chorus-in-residence at Terra State Community College. Composed of more than 100 student and community singers across five counties in Northwest Ohio, membership ranges from high school students to adults.
TCS is conducted by Michael Shirtz and accompanied by the college’s Chamber Arts Orchestra. The group also collaborates annually in performances with regional arts organizations and schools. The chorus has performed with such artists as Joyce Carolyn, C. Andrew Blosser, Elizabeth Von Trapp and Jane Eaglen, and appears annually with the Firelands Symphony.
Since 2002, TCS has performed masterworks by Faure, Brahms, Mozart and Handel, tribute concerts to Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, the stage and screen, and annual large-scale productions paying tribute to America’s veterans. In May, TCS performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. as part of the nation’s Memorial Day Choral Festival.
TCS’s 2012-2013 season includes concerts of their annual Holiday Festival “Spirit of the Season” in December, a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony “Joyful, Joyful” in February with the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, and concludes in April with a concert of masterworks titled “Music That Changed the World!” In November, the TCS will present a special concert for the inauguration of Terra’s new president, paying tribute to America’s servicemen and women and more titled “Service, Honor and Dedication.”
The mission of TCS is to promote cultural enrichment through choral music, with educational and performance opportunities for college students and community singers. This fall TCS supports the development of the new Terra State Children’s Choir. New members are welcomed and encouraged to come join the choir.
The TCS first rehearsal begins Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m. located in the Recital Hall in the Marsha S. Bordner Arts and Health Technologies Center (Building D) at Terra.
Registration for the TCS is $30 per semester or $50 for the year. High school and senior discounts apply. For more information about the Terra Choral Society, please contact the Music Department at 419-559-2233.
