    Course Description:

    Students acquire knowledge of the patient/client model and the role of the physical therapist assistant. Emphasis is placed on the PT/PTA relationship; behavioral expectations of the PTA; acquisition of foundational knowledge; procedural, intervention and data collection skills. Students are introduced to the concepts of communication; psychosocial, cultural, and ethical factors; values-based behaviors and life-long learning in the context of the physical therapy profession. Students are also instructed in procedural, interventions and data collections techniques in areas that include; documentation; infection control; vital signs; cardiac conditioning; body mechanics; postural awareness; positioning and draping; range of motion; activities of daily living; patient handling, mobility and accessibility; and special care environments.

    This course introduces students to the application of physical agenets used to treat a variety of conditions including pain, muscle weakness, contractures, and lymphedema. The course provides didactic instruction for thermal and athermal agents, hydrotherapy, ultrasound, short-wave diathermy, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis, compression, laser, mechanical traction; massage; biofeedback; posturual drainage; amputations and wound care. The course utilizes threaded discussions; reflective learning and an Integrated Practice (IP) clinical experience to facilitate timely acquistion, integration and application of knowledge, skills and behaviors.

    This course is the first of 2 full-time (38 hours/week) 8-week clinical practicums. The skills and knowledge acquired over the length of the PTA program will be applied in supervised, direct patient care in a selected clinical setting. Student will provide safe and quality care ot patients with uncomplicated to comlex diagnoses under the supervision and direction of the assigned Clinical Instrucotr (CI) and in accordance the patient's plan of care, patient complexity/acuity, the physical environment, governing laws, facility policies, and the student's skill level. Student are evaluated using the electronic Clinical Performance Instrument (e-CPI). The final grade for the course is:1)based on the e-CPI; 2)determined by the PTA Program Director in collaboration with the CI; and, 3)graded in accordance with a Satisfactory/Unstatisfactory grading scale.
