    This course covers theory and lab instruction in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). Welding laboratory projects will provide students with the skills necessary to meet the AWS D1.1 acceptance criteria for SMAW fillet and groove welds in the flat, horizontal vertical and overhead positions on mild carbon steel plate. Lecture topics include safety, selection and preparation of welding joints, carbon and low alloy steel electrodes, welding in all four positions, machine setup, and welding electrode manipulation techniques.
