Kathy Elsass, 1994 and 1996 Kathy Elsass likely had no idea when she graduated from Ridgemont High School in Ridgeway, Ohio that one day she would be the commencement speaker for the class of 2001 at Bowling Green State University. But after being named the “Outstanding Senior” of the College of Technology at BGSU, that’s exactly what happened. How is Terra Community College related to this success story? Elsass started her post-secondary education at Terra, earning an Associate’s Degree in Computer Information Systems (Summa cum laude) in 1994 and an Associate’s in Mechanical Engineering (Magna cum laude) in 1996. She then earned a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Technology at BGSU. “Terra allowed me to experience a diverse array of systems used in manufacturing using hands-on instruction techniques,” she said. “The facilities and equipment plus excellent instructors enhanced the learning experience.” Elsass was working at Thyssen Krupp Atlas in Fostoria when she earned her Terra and BGSU degrees. She first worked in Process Documentation, AutoCAD, then moved to SPC Coordinator and later became a Capital Improvement Specialist. She currently is a Production Supervisor and is the lead supervisor of the large crank line at TK Atlas. She coordinates several types of products through the production line, supervises about 40 employees and ensures that customer demand is met. Along the way, she has achieved Six Sigma Green Belt Certification through TK Atlas and Six Sigma Canada. She is a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and is both a Certified Manufacturing Technician and Manufacturing Engineer. Her view of education is obvious. “Never stop learning,” she said. “Take every opportunity for additional education, training and hands-on experience.” Elsass lives in Fostoria with husband, Robert, sons, Tracy, Travis and Nicholas, and daughter, Kelli.
