Terra Success Stories

Barbara McGrady - 1976 Terra Graduate
Barbara McGrady was in on the ground floor of the Graphic Arts program at Terra, and 27 years later she is still reaping the benefits.
As owner of “The Art Department, Ink,” she offers a wide range of freelance, computer graphics services from her home. The company specializes in logo design, publishing, specialized advertising, business form design and more.
“Terra offered a wide range of graphic education, from dark room experience to the psychology behind advertising,” McGrady said. “Our instructors covered a wide array of subjects, all of which have proven useful at one time or another.”
McGrady was in the first class of graphic arts students at Terra. When she graduated in 1976 with an Associate’s Degree in Applied Business in Graphic Arts, Terra’s job placement program helped her land a job at Moore Business Forms in Fremont.
“Terra provides an excellent placement service, offering lots of job-hunting tips and leads,” she said.
Since that first job, McGrady has worked at Mark Advertising, St. Charles Hospital Graphic Arts Department, The News-Messenger and Consolite Corporation. She has been the owner/operator of Zenobia’s New-to-You Furniture and owner/publisher/editor/art production of E.D. Herb – Health & Harmony, a successful, 24-page, four-color, alternative health and wellness-related monthly magazine.
Terra has left an impression on McGrady who returns to campus occasionally as a guest lecturer in Bob Jones’ classes.
“The instructors seemed to really care about the progress of each student, offering special, personal assistance when needed,” she said. “Terra also offers cutting edge equipment in computers and computer programs.”
Her advice for students exploring the field of graphic arts?
“The Graphic Arts field is ever changing, with incredible advancements in computer graphic programs and equipment,” she said. “Behind any successful business is an effective advertising campaign. There will always be a need for creative, knowledgeable graphic artists.”
