SUCCESS STORY – THOMAS MASON Thomas Mason was a leader during his college days and has continued in that path in his professional career. Before Mason became the president and senior consultant for Management Assistance, Inc., he was the student body president at the predecessor of Terra Community College, Terra Technical College. It was a good start for the Fremont native. “Being the president of the student body at Terra helped prepare me for my career but also I am thankful for good instruction, encouraging staff and Mr. Roy Klay (Terra’s first president) for being a role model for me,” said Mason, who now lives in LaGrange Township, south of Elyria. Mason graduated from Fremont Ross High School in 1968 and enrolled at Terra in 1971. He graduated cum laude in 1973 with an Associate of Applied Business and then continued his studies at the University of Toledo where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business in 1981, also garnering cum laude honors. Since then Mason has held positions in purchasing, personnel and manufacturing production control and has served as a manufacturing analyst, software consultant and senior consultant manager. Now as the president of Management Assistance, Inc., he is involved with sales, administration and consulting. Recently, he was quoted in an article about database security in Cleveland’s Inside Business magazine. He is also a frequent speaker at the annual Ohio Library Conference and other similar conferences on computer security and communications. Mason has advice for those who want to pursue a career in business. “Study in your field and in general to be prepared to do your job, whatever is required to keep the customer happy,” he said. “Maintain your integrity and sell yourself. Profits will follow.” In the ‘70s, Mason was highlighted in an ad for the college, appropriately with the phrase, “Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow.” Today, as a successful professional, he continues to be one of the many alumni who demonstrate what a Terra degree can do.
