Terra Success Story

Alma Herrera

Alma Herrera, 1999 Accounting Graduate

As it has for countless others in the past 36 years, Terra Community College served as a springboard for Alma Herrera.

The 1983 Napoleon High School graduate didn’t find her way to Terra until the fall of 1995. But it was worth the wait. After graduating in 1999 with an associate’s degree in accounting, Herrera moved on to Bowling Green State University. Her studies – and her involvement – at Terra helped pave the way.

“I was the president of Phi Theta Kappa (the community college honorary) my last year at Terra,” said Herrera, who now lives in Fremont. “BGSU awarded me a three-year renewal scholarship which paid for all of my tuition for three years. I was also inducted into Pi Omega Pi which is a business education life-time organization.”

Herrera is currently in her second year teaching computer applications, computer programming, Internet Web page design, keyboarding, word processing and PowerPoint for Woodmore Local Schools. She will finish work on a master’s degree this summer.

“By taking the accounting program at Terra, I was able to transfer to BGSU into the business education program,” Herrera said. “I will have a nice pay increase after I am done with my master’s degree.”

She suggests that potential students take as many computer classes as possible.

“Technology is the key to the future in any job,” she said.

Terra has left an impression on Herrera and her family.

“Since Terra gave me the foundation needed to continue my education and become very successful, my husband, Jaime, has decided to attend Terra Community College,” she said. “And I am also hoping that our daughter, Veronica, will attend as a Post-Secondary student and start her college career at Terra.”
