Success Story-
Bonnie Cruz-Weaver

Bonnie Cruz-Weaver isn't satisfied that she's earned three degrees and has a good job in education. She wants others to feel the same success.

Three years ago, this Clyde native became the first English as a Second Language Specialist for the Fremont City School District. And recently, she accepted a part-time position as an Outreach Specialist for Underserved Populations at Terra Community College.

Cruz-Weaver graduated from Terra in 1998 with an Associate of Arts in Pre-Education. She went on to earn two degrees from Bowling Green State University, a Bachelor of Science in Education in 2001 and a Master of Education and Curriculum in 2004. She has used her education well. Besides teaching fourth grade in Fremont, she has worked for the Texas Migrant Council, WSOS and Fremont City Schools' summer migrant program.

With the migrant council, Cruz-Weaver was a site coordinator in Tiffin and was responsible for assisting migrant families and their children in an infant through preschool setting.

She assisted elementary and middle school students in the After School program sponsored by WSOS, and she taught fifth and sixth grades throughout the months of June, July and August through the Fremont schools' summer migrant program.

"I am committed to raising the bar for our youth while offering a safe and nurturing learning environment," she said.

Recently, Cruz-Weaver became an adviser at Terra to help serve underserved populations get into - and be successful at - college.

"Higher education is a must for any career advancement," she said. "I know first hand of the persistence it takes to overcome adversity in order to reach one's goals. My position at Terra will allow me to lend guidance for students and their families who are currently or in the future may be overwhelmed by college preparation and uncertainty of their responsibilities, such as financial aid and transfer options. I simply want to be a helping hand in making the college experience a positive one."

Cruz-Weaver believes this is just a start.

"I look forward to meeting and aiding any students who feel that they will benefit from this support," she said. "In the future, I hope to extend my support into middle and high school levels. Doing this will begin the process of bridging the gap between Fremont City Schools and Terra Community College in hopes of better preparing our minority students for the college experience."

Cruz-Weaver lives in Clyde with her husband, Brian. She is a member of Voces Unidas of Sandusky County and Triumph Foundation Church.
