Success Story- Christina Szymanowski When Christina Szymanowski enrolled at Terra Community College, she had no idea she would be linked to the school like no other student before her. The 2002 Fremont Ross graduate was a stellar soccer goalie for the Little Giants and was involved in other activities in high school as well. She found a unique way to continue being active at Terra. Christina was the first official Terra mascot, ThunderCat. It was a job that served her – and Terra Community College – well. “It has come to be the opportunity of a lifetime,” she said. “Being ThunderCat really allowed me to enjoy Terra to the fullest. Also, I think it has made me a better person and helped me enjoy life – the little things – more.” Christina was also a member of Terra’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national community college honorary. When she applied for transfer to the University of Toledo, Christina also applied for the Community College Transfer Scholarship. She proudly listed her service as Terra’s mascot and mentioned it in every phone call she made to Toledo. It worked. Christina was awarded the transfer scholarship which includes in-state tuition (up to 16 hours) and general fees totaling at least $7,054 for the 2005-2006 academic year. The award is renewable for a second year as long as the student remains eligible. This fall, she took her associate degrees in Fine Arts and Social and Behavioral Science to Toledo where she is majoring in Art Education. Added to the Web 12/20/05 |
