Terra Success Stories
Success Story-Sheriff Kyle Overmyer Sandusky County Sheriff and Terra Community College graduate Kyle Overmyer found himself back on campus recently as he served as one of two alumni speakers at the 2009 Commencement. For Kyle, Terra was a smart start. "I feel that Terra Community College did not only provide me with a solid education, but it provided me friendships that have grown immensely over the years," he said. Kyle graduated from St. Joseph Central Catholic High School in 1992. He completed the Police Academy at Terra in 1995, earned an Associate of Applied Science in Law Enforcement/Police Science from Terra in 2001, and received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Tiffin University in 2003. He began his law enforcement career in 1996 as a corrections officer for the Sandusky County Sheriff's Office. He worked his way up through the ranks, serving in the road patrol division and then as Detective Sergeant and Detective Captain in which his main focus was narcotics investigations in the county. In September, 2008, Kyle was appointed by the Sandusky County Republican Committee to serve as Sheriff after the death of long-time Sheriff David Gangwer. Kyle was elected to that position in the fall of 2008 and is currently the youngest sheriff in the county's history and the youngest sheriff in Ohio. His message to the Class of 2009 was simple. "You are in control of your destiny and life," he said. "The sky is truly the limit. If you can dream it, you can most certainly achieve it. A dream is how all great leaders begin their journey." Kyle and his wife, Melanie, have two children, Mikayla and Dillon. His parents are Smokey and Cheryl Overmyer.
