CAD Specialist Major

Computer Assisted Drafting and Design has become an integral part of product design and manufacturing. From preliminary drawings, to parametric design, to animated assembly, to computer-aided manufacturing, CAD systems simplify, enhance and streamline the process.

Many people use CAD on the job. In larger companies, individuals use only a small part of the systems' capabilities to handle their specific assignments. However, some specialists need to have an understanding of operation and use of the entire CAD package. In smaller companies, the CAD people must also have this broad understanding.

The CAD Specialist major provides an applied knowledge of all aspects of a CAD software system, including installation and configuration.

Capstone Experience

Students in Met 201 Intro to Product Design, MET 250 CAD/CAM I, and MET 251 CAM/CAM II will be involved in a yearlong capstone project. Students will use the technology from all courses in this curriculum to work  with area industries to solve real world problems in this technical field.

The faculty has identified the following Learning Outcomes for all graduates:

  • Able to comprehend blueprint drawing.
  • Understand the basics of industrial electricity, hydraulics and quality control.
  • Prepare drawing on Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to completely describe a part for manufacture, including views and tolerances.
  • Apply CAD skills to produce an assemblies, animations, and rendering of parts in various software packages.
  • Learn to produce and inspect parts using various types of tools and manual machines.
  • Program, produce and inspect parts on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equipment.
  • Learn to produce parts on Computer-Aided Maching (CAM) software packages.
