MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING

Engineering Design Major

Current Program and Course Description Information:
Current College Catalog*
Engineering Design Curriculum

Students in the Engineering Design major learn to apply the principles of mathematics and physics to solve realworld design problems. Computers are also used extensively to aid in problem-solving and visualization.

Traditional engineering courses such as Statics and Strength of Materials are blended with applied courses such as CAD and machining to develop both cognitive and psycho-motor skills.

Many of the advanced courses are project-oriented and emphasize how to recognize and solve problems with a minimum amount of instructor intervention.

This degree is designed for students who wish to transfer to a Mechanical Engineering Technology bachelor’s degree after completing their associate’s degree here at Terra. This ensures maximum transferability from Terra Community College to other colleges across the state.

Capstone Experience

The faculty has identified the following Learning Outcomes for all graduates:

  • Able to comprehend blueprint drawings.
  • Understand the basics of industrial electricity, hydraulics and quality control.
  • Prepare drawing on Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to completely describe a part for manufacture including views and tolerances.
  • Apply CAD skills to produce assemblies of parts in various software packages.
  • Learn to produce and inspect parts using various types of tolls and manual machines.
  • Program, produce and inspect parts on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equipment.
  • Learn to produce parts on Computer-Aided Machining (CAM) software packages.
  • Complete a mechanical design from concept to completion in a timely manner.
