Health Information Technology

Health information management is the profession that focuses on health care data and the management of healthcare information resources.  The Health Information Technology (HIT) program combines the knowledge and skills from the disciplines of medicine, information management, business applications and computer technology within the healthcare industry.  The HIT program is appropriate for individuals interested in preparing themselves for employment in a wide variety of healthcare settings.

Graduates of the Health Information Technology program perform a variety of tasks that are constantly changing with their work environment.  They are responsible for a variety of health information functions such as organizing, analyzing and technically evaluating health information; compiling various administrative and health statistics; coding diseases, operations and other procedures for research data bases; and reimbursement.

These individuals may also maintain and use a variety of health information indices, special registries for researchers, computerized health data storage and retrieval systems, and control the use and release of health information. 
General supervisory responsibilities may be included in their position.
