Computer Information Systems Major

Current Program and Course Description Information: 

The Computer Information Systems program
is designed for students who have a preference
for structure, logic, and detail.
Computers are used in almost every business,
industry, and profession. Excellent opportunities
exist for individuals who are
goal-oriented and who possess programming
language and operating skills.

Students in this program are highly motivated,
organized, logical, and willing to commit
themselves to tasks, and complete projects on
time without close supervision. Graduates of
the Computers Information Systems program
learn several state-of-the-art computer languages
and are exposed to program
development tools, including the use of fourth
generation
and web based development tools.

The faculty has identified the following
Learning Outcomes for all graduates:

  • Code and develop both windows and
    web based application components; design
    and develop an integrated windows
    and web based information system; develop
    individual components of an application
    system in typical mid-range non-windows environment.
  • Interact with both single user and multiuser
    operating system software; identify
    differences in single user and multi-user
    operating systems; be able to navigate
    and/or configure multiple operating system
    platforms.
  • Design and develop a relational database;
    identify characteristics databases that conform
    to 3rd normal forma and implement
    3rd normal form into a database; identify
    and implement binary relationships within
    a database; gain experience with a state
    of the art client server DBMS.
  • Identify, compare, and use basic data communication
    terms, basic tools of data communications,
    and elements necessary for
    connectivity between networks and computer
    systems; configure, implement, and
    troubleshoot a network.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how individuals
    interact within an organization.
