Dr. Kirsten C. Kunkle
Zwischenfach

Voice

Dr. Kirsten C. Kunkle holds degrees from the University of Michigan (DMA and MM in Voice Performance) and Bowling Green State University (BMA in Voice Performance). 

She currently serves on the voice faculty through the Music Department at Youngstown State University, as well as on the voice faculty through the Department of Theatre Studies, Dance, and Motion Picture at Wright State University.  Dr. Kunkle is an active Zwischenfach performer, specializing in repertoire featuring both the mezzo-soprano and soprano ranges. 

Dr. Kunkle's solo premiere with the Toledo Symphony was this summer at a Music Under the Stars performance at the Toledo Zoo.  She has also been the soloist with the Toledo Symphony for the recent Willis B.Boyer concert. She performed for many years with the Toledo Opera and was in the world premiere of "Margaret Garner" at Michigan Opera Theater. She has coached with Martin Katz and Jean Schneider and studied under Barbara Kondalski, Virginia Starr, Barbara Lockard-Zimmerman, and Rico Serbo.  

Favorite roles and performances have included The Witch in "Hansel and Gretel" (UM Opera),  Marcellina in "Le Nozze di Figaro" (BG Opera), Gianetta in "The Gondoliers" (Black Swamp Theatre),  Arnalta in "L'incoronazione di Poppea" (UM Opera), Adelaide in "High Jinks" (Comic Opera Guild), Soprano soloist in "The Armed Man" (Rackham Symphony Choir), Alto Soloist in Mozart's "Requiem" (Toledo Choral Society), and Susie in "The Velvet Lady" (Comic Opera Guild). 

Dr. Kunkle commissioned and premiered sixteen original compositions, including her own, based upon the poetry of her ancestor and Poet Laureate of the Native American Muscogee Nation, Alex Posey, as part of her doctoral dissertation. Dr. Kunkle has recorded extensively through the Comic Opera Guild, specializing in the works of Victor Herbert.  Her recordings are collected at the Library of Congress, the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institution, and the Merkel Area Museum in Merkel, Texas.
