Finding Money for College

 


“Finding Money for College” is for new students who haven’t yet applied for financial aid. It is designed to instruct students on how to apply for aid, where to search and where not to search for aid, and what the characteristics of various types of financial aid are. The cost of education is also covered with an emphasis on how cost relates to the expected family contribution to determine students’ need.


Learning Objectives: Students will learn --

 

  • To access the federal student aid information online
  • How to register for and use a U.S. Department of Education PIN number,  
  • About the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • How to use free searches for college scholarships,
  • To distinguish types of free financial aid from types of
    self-help aid,
  • About financial aid award packages,
  • About federal tax breaks for higher education,
  • How to reduce college costs.

Activities/Assignments: 

  1. Get to a computer with Internet access.
  2. Open the Internet browser and enter the url
    www.studentaid.ed.gov

  3. The student aid website has a roadway theme, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and has many tools for students.

  4. Select the tool on the left column of the screen “My FSA.” Follow the steps to set up your personal account for student aid information. This will take a few minutes.  You will be able to use your account for the scholarship search.

  5. Return to the student aid homepage and select the “Funding” road sign. Read the various sections on the funding screen and open this worksheet as either an MS Word (.doc)file or as a Rich Text Format (.rtf) file and answer all the questions.

  6. Submit the worksheet to your instructor by email.
