Owning Your Opportunity:
Responsible Enrollment Choices

 

NOTE:  This module is required for all students receiving federal student aid.

 


College students in America have the chance to attend the best higher edcuation system in the world. As a democratic society we give access to college to almost everyone who has graduated from high school or attained the equivalent. It is a valuable opportunity and a great investment in people. Students will learn about the importance of their enrollment choices, timing and procedures related to enrollment changes, educational rights and privacy, academic progress, and the consequences of negligence. Support services for students will also be highlighted. Responsible enrollment choices are a key factor in students’ success.


Learning Objectives:

 

Students will learn –

 

  • The importance of academic advising and having a plan,
  • About the various enrollment levels and how these relate to time management,
  • About the course drop and add period and schedule change procedures throughout the term,
  • About the College’s fee refund policy for course drops,
  • The signficance of census day enrollment for financial aid awards,
  • Their rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA),
  • About the importance of class attendance and participation,
  • About the Return of Federal Student Aid Policy for student withdrawals,
  • About the College’s Academic Standards,
  • About the Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress for Federal Student Aid recipients,
  • How to calculate grade point average,
  • How to calculate course completion rate,
  • To identify the consequences of negligence on college enrollment,
  • To recognize support services that are available through the College.

Required resources:

A Powerpoint presentation accessed from the College web site and the Terra Community College Catalog and Student Handbook are the required resources.
