Assessment of Student Learning/Cultural Writing Assignment 

 


This module will explain how student learning is assessed at Terra, how the e-portfolio is a part of that process, and your first assessment assignment. 

Learning Objectives: 

 

Upon completion of this module, a student will

  • Have an understanding of the assessment of student learning at Terra Community College
  • Have written an essay related to cultural diversity

  • Be able to upload a document to the e-portfolio

Required Rescources:

Computer/word processing access; e-portfolio access through the student portal.

 

 

Activities/Assignments:

 

  1. Read Assessment of Student Learning at Terra Community College.

  2. Read The Purpose of an E-Portfolio

  3. Complete a cultural diversity essay. Give yourself fifty minutes to address the following:

    Please describe a culture in the United States other than your own.  How do you know about this culture?  Has your understanding of it changed?  If so, please describe the changes and why they came about.  Please explain how your perception of this culture could help or hinder your effectiveness in a culturally diverse workplace. 

    Be specific in your response.  Use examples with explanations that support the points you are trying to make.  Remember to include an introduction and conclusion.  Keep in mind that this writing will reflect your current writing ability and understanding of cultural diversity.  This writing may be compared to writings that you complete during and near the end of your academic program to assist the college in the assessment of teaching and learning.  Please give the assignment your best effort.
  4. Upload your assignment to your e-portfolio, following the steps below:

    1.      Access your student portal.

    2.      Click on Academic and then My E-portfolio. (A list of any e-portfolio courses that you are enrolled in will appear.)

    3.      Select the appropriate course by clicking on the Upload link, and then browse for your document (stored on your computer, or on a disk or other storage device).

    4.      Click upload to upload your document to your e-portfolio.

    5.      A confirmation page will appear with the upload finishes.  Use the printer icon in the upper right open a receipt that you can print.  Close this window when you are finished printing.

    6.      Click the link at the bottom of the confirmation page to return to your e-portfolio course listing.

    7.      You may access and print the receipt again if necessary by clicking the receipt link now displayed in place of the upload link.  This receipt becomes available permanently after the document is uploaded.

    8.      If you realize that you made an error and need to re-upload, contact the “upload manager” at info@terra.edu.  If you do not get a response with 1-2 days, contact your division office.

  5. In addition to uploading your cultural diversity assignment to your e-portfolio, you must complete the quiz for this module and email it to your instructor.  Open the quiz as either an MS Word (.doc) file or a rich text format (.rtf) file.
