PET 1240
Introduction to Color

3 Lec 3 Credits
No Prerequisites required

Terra Community College has recognized a need for color education in the industry, not only in our local area, but throughout the country and the world.  To address this need, the college has founded the International Institute for the Coloring of Plastics, a new phase in this unique programs history.  The goal for the Institute is to become the worlds number one source for education and information about the coloring of plastics.  The first project for the Institute is to convert Terra Community Colleges Coloring of Plastics Program from a strictly on-campus program to include distance and hybrid courses.  This course is the first installment of this project.  It is the introductory course in the Coloring of Plastics Program and is part of a three-course certificate entitled: Color for Processors. The course will be delivered so that you can take it right on your computer.  PET 1240 is an introduction to color theory as it applies primarily to the coloring of plastic materials.  This course will provide the background information required to develop color matching skills in plastics, which could also be applied to printing inks, textiles, or paints. Topics covered include: how we see color; color mixing laws; systems used to describe colors and color differences; color difference measurement; and the use of spectrophotometers in color measurement. A basic discussion of colorants used to color plastics will be presented.

This course will use PowerPoint slides to augment the written material in the main course text: Billmeyer & Saltzman s Principles of Color Technology, 3rd Ed., Roy S. Berns.  A second book, The New Munsell Student Color Set  including color information and exercises, will be used.

Lessons and assignments will become available and will be due the same day the following week. The software that will be used to deliver the course is called MICROSOFT Class Server.  Once you sign up for the course you will be given instructions on how to connect to the course material.
