Student and Advisor Roles and Responsibilities

Student Responsibilities:

  • Know and understand your degree requirements, College policies and procedures, and deadlines. You can find this information in the College Catalog & Student Handbook.
  • Keep in contact with your advisor at least once per semester for course selection.
  • Schedule appointments with your advisor early during registration periods and arrive on time and prepared for the appointment.  Bring with you a tentative list of courses you plan to take, and your advising materials.
  • Keep all scheduled appointments. If you are unable to make your appointment, it is a courtesy to call so others may have that appointment time.
  • Immediately consult your advisor if you begin to experience academic difficulty.
  • Follow through with appropriate action(s) after meeting with your advisor, and complete all necessary paperwork.
  • Promptly inform your advisor of changes to your major and any concerns about your program.
  • Seek assistance when needed.
  • Check your Terra email and CAMS student portal regularly.
  • Be responsible for your academic progress and accept responsibility for your decisions.
  • Maintain your current name, address, and contact information with the College.
  • For transfer students, select a major and transfer school as quickly as possible and become familiar with the requirements needed for that major as well as transfer policies at the institution to which you plan to transfer.  Contact an advisor at the target institution to establish a relationship.

Advisor Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate information about educational options, degree requirements and prerequisites, and Terra policies and procedures.
  • Help students clarify their educational goals, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and help them explore the ramifications of their decisions for their future occupational goal.
  • Help students develop an educational plan that will meet their academic and career goals.  Assist in course selection.
  • Help students accept responsibility for their own actions and decisions.
  • Help students monitor their academic progress toward graduation.
  • Know where to refer students when additional resources are necessary, and provide information and referrals to campus and community resources.
  • Listen to students' concerns and provide assistance and/or referrals.
  • Initiate a continuing evaluation of the advisor-advisee relationship.  Assess the extent to which the advising relationship is meeting students' needs and goals, and if appropriate help students transition to another academic advisor.
