Medical Assisting Certificate

This certificate is designed to train students to assist physicians in a variety of practice settings. Students learn office skills associated with the medical profession and will be eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification examination upon successful completion of the curriculum. Certificate credits may also be applied to an appropriate associate degree.

Terra State Community College’s Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).

  • Display professionalism and ethical responsibility in performing as a medical assistant.
  • Apply HIPAA regulations in regards to the privacy of patient’s medical information.
  • Use effective communication skills with patients, physicians, and co-workers.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in human anatomy and physiology. Use medical terminology correctly when communicating with other healthcare professionals.
  • Perform administrative duties such as maintaining patient’s medical records, scheduling appointments, opening and closing the medical office, answering the phone, and using computerized practice management software.
  • Perform clinical duties such as assisting the physician with procedures and exams, obtaining vital signs and medical histories, patient screening, documentation, collecting and processing specimens, performing phlebotomy, performing CLIA waived testing, administering medications, performing ECGs and spirometry.
  • Apply knowledge in the principles of infection control, aseptic techniques, and OSHA standards that apply to the medical office.
  • Apply knowledge in local, federal and state legislation as it applies to patient care, performing within the scope of practice, and safety to patients.
  • Demonstrate proficient knowledge in bookkeeping including accounts payable and accounts receivable, medical coding, and third party guidelines.
  • Perform dosage and mathematical calculations of medications and administer medications per physicians order.
  • Serve as an advocate for patients when dealing with the physician and third parties.
