The Ohio Mathematics Association
of Two Year Colleges (OhioMATYC)
Student Scholarship Award

Deborah Woods Scholarship & Student Scholarships

 Purpose of the Awards

The purpose of the OhioMATYC Deborah Woods Scholarship and OhioMATYC Student Scholarships is to encourage the study of mathematics by students enrolled in an institution of higher education.

 Criteria

1.      Each qualifying institution may submit one name.  To be a qualifying institution, the institution must employ at least one paid-up member of OhioMATYC.

 2.      The students must be nominated by their qualifying institutions.

 3.      The nominated student must have taken a minimum of 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours of college credit courses.

 4.      The nominated student must have an overall GPA of 3.0 in the college credit courses.

5.      The nominated student must have taken a minimum of 9 quarter-hours or 6 semester-hours of college mathematics, (including one calculus, business calculus, or tech calculus course), maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.500 in these courses.

 6.      The nominated student must have successfully completed at least one course, at the level of calculus or above, at the nominating institution.

Method of Selection

 1.      A letter will be sent by OhioMATYC’s president to the Mathematics Department chairperson of each qualifying institution.  The chairperson should announce to all calculus students (and above) that the scholarship exists.  Students who meet the criteria should be invited to submit a completed application form and their official transcript to the Mathematics Department.

 2.      Each institution should then select the one student it wishes to nominate (from their applicant pool) and then send that one student’s nomination form (with official transcript) back to the president of OhioMATYC.  The nomination form (with official transcript) must be received by September 29, 2007.

 3.      Scholarship recipients will be determined by a random draw once the nominees have been carefully screened to make sure that they fulfill the above criteria.  The drawing will take place at the October 5th fall meeting.

 4.      The scholarship money will then be sent jointly to the college and the recipient so that the money may be used in the winter quarter or second semester.

Note: The amount of the scholarship to be awarded will be reviewed each year. A letter will be sent to all mathematics department chairs of institutions with membership in OhioMATYC announcing the scholarship.
