Associate of Arts American Sign Language Twelve hours are required in an area of concentration. American Sign Language, or ASL, is the universal language of the deaf community. A knowledge of ASL is valuable to people in interpretation, deaf education, law, health care, and other fields. An increasing number of Transfer Programs and Degrees of colleges and universities are recognizing ASL as a foreign language for the purpose of meeting their foreign language requirements. The A.A. degree is intended for anyone interested in developing language skills that allow for conversation with deaf people or as a language foundation for those who intend to further pursue a Bachelor’s degree in either Deaf Education or Sign Language Interpretation. Upon completion of the A.A. in ASL, students can transfer to Bethel College, Madonna University, University of Akron and several other colleges to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Interpreting, or to seek a Deaf Education degree at Bowling Green State University or Kent State University as well as other institutions. In order to complete this concentration, students must select a minimum of 12 hours from the following courses. It is strongly recommended that each student intending to transfer take all the ASL courses. *Course Descriptions are available in the 2006-2007 College Catalog Credit Hrs.
