Class Schedules

Quarterly class schedules are published prior to registration dates for each quarter. These schedules contain course numbers, course titles, credit hours for each course, and days and times each class is scheduled to meet. Copies of class schedules are mailed to all students and are also available in all buildings. Class schedules are also located on the internet at www.terra.edu.

Adding and Dropping Classes

Students may add courses to their original class schedules by completing a Schedule Change Form available in the Records Office. Beginning the third week of the quarter, the instructor's written permission is required for the course to be added.

Students may withdraw from a course by completing a Schedule Change Form in the Records Office. A grade of "W" will be given when the student officially withdraws from courses from the first day of classes through the last day of the 6th week of the quarter. An instructor's signature is required after the 6th week of classes.

The deadline for withdrawing from a class is seven calendar days before the end of the quarter. Students who stop attending classes without officially withdrawing will receive an "F" and will lose any possible tuition refund. See "Special Grades" on the following pages.

Attendance

Regular and prompt attendance is expected in all classes. Students who are absent because of illness or emergency should notify their instructor(s) immediately.

Regular attendance and consistent study habits are necessary for academic success at Terra. Faculty members may incorporate attendance into their grading systems, especially when performance competencies are directly affected.

Excessive absences are defined as the number of absences which, in the professional judgment of the instructor, jeopardize a student's satisfactory progress.

Prerequisites Skills Policy

To enhance student performance and provide the greatest opportunity for academic success, Terra Community College has identified courses for which students must demonstrate basic skills or specific knowledge prior to enrolling in the course. For some courses, student preparedness is demonstrated through pretesting and in other courses through the completion of prerequisites.

Pretesting.  Before taking English, mathematics or any course requiring college-level reading skills, students must demonstrate their skill level based on COMPASS assessment test scores. ACT scores, the transfer of comparable coursework from an accredited college or university, or successful completion of CLA courses may also be used to demonstrate attainment of these skills.

Because the COMPASS test is administered on a computer, students may take it at their convenience and take as much time as necessary to complete it. Students may take this assessment at any time by visiting the Student Services office of by calling the office at 419-334-8400, ext. 345.

Any degree-seeking student who is not taking English, mathematics or a course requiring college-level reading skills may take up to 20 hours before pretesting.

Prerequisites.  Some advanced courses require the completion of prerequisite courses. Advanced placement through articulation agreements, career Passports from Joint Vocational Schools, or AP credit may substitute for a prerequisite course.

Repeated Courses

Students may repeat courses taken at Terra to improve their original grade. After successfully repeating a course, the student should file a Course Repeat form so that the new grade can be calculated into the GPA. Forms are available in the Student Records Office.

The grade received the first time the course was taken will remain on the transcript, but the points received will not be calculated into the cumulative totals. Only one course repeat petition per course is allowed.
