TRANSFER, WORK EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER KINDS OF CREDIT
Transfer Credit Evaluation
Students who have earned college credit at another college or university before attending Terra Community College may be eligible for transfer credit.
An official evaluation of the transfer credit will be completed by the Registrar after the student has been admitted to Terra Community College and has submitted official transcripts from all previously attended post-secondary institutions. An official transcript contains the signature of the registrar, the date issued, and an embossed seal. Official transcripts must be mailed from the issuing institution to the Registrar at Terra, or an official transcript may be placed in a sealed envelope at the issuing institution and hand-delivered to the Records Office at Terra Community College.
Transfer credit is granted for college-level and some technical courses earned at regionally accredited institutions of higher education for which students receive a grade of "C" or higher. Courses graded on a pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis are subject to further evaluation.
Transfer credit guidelines for those students who have completed the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science are listed under the Statewide Transfer Policy.
The procedure for contesting transfer of credit decisions is detailed in the Student Handbook.
Grade by Examination
After the second week of a quarter, a student may request Grade by Examination from an instructor. The instructor may give the exam when the student has demonstrated adequate prior education or training.
If the results of the exam are satisfactory, the instructor gives a letter grade and credit for the course. The grade is computed in the cumulative grade point average. Students need to take the exam by the fifth week of a quarter and may attempt the exam only once during a quarter.
Proficiency Examination
Students may receive credit for previous academic work or experience on the basis of a Proficiency Examination. Individuals may take a proficiency exam at any time prior to enrollment in the course. To take a Proficiency Exam, students should file a petition in the Cashier's Office. The fee is $10 per credit hour and must be paid at the same time.
If the results of the exam are satisfactory, "CR" is entered on the student's permanent record. Such credit is not included in the grade point average or in the total cumulative grade point average. Credit by proficiency examination cannot exceed two-thirds of the total hours toward an associate degree.
Students who have received an "F" or "W" in a course for which they petition for proficiency examination must have their petition approved by the Registrar. These students will also be asked to submit evidence of supplemental work in the subject area.
Previous Training/Work Experience
Students may be granted credit for proficiencies gained through previous training or work experience. Required courses in a technology program may be waived in lieu of such training. Students interested in applying for this type of credit may request the necessary form from the Student Records Office and arrange an appointment with the dean of their division. There is a fee of $10 per credit hour.
Alternative Academic Credit
Academic credit may be awarded for previous academic studies, work or life experience, or formal training.
There is no fee for military credit or for articulation agreements with high schools, joint vocational schools, tech prep or advanced placement of CLEP. There is a fee of $10 per credit hour for all others.
