wonderful opportunity to help develop letter formation skills. You can help foster emergent writing skills by encouraging your child to sign in each day upon arrival. Some children may prefer to trace the letters in their name, while others may want to write the letters on their own. You may also want to take time to discuss the names of each letter in your child’s name.

Our year is off to an exciting start! In addition to exploring the environment, the children have been busy investigating a variety of ideas.

We have been observing and documenting the rainbows which have been appearing in our room. We have found rainbows on the floor, on our furniture, and on each other! We visited the Big School Library to gather some additional information on this phenomenon.

The children have also expressed an interest in letters and writing. To foster this interest, we have been playing letter recognition and matching games . We have also stocked our writing center with  letter stencils and environmental print cards. Each card has a familiar picture and word on it. The children have been referencing these word cards  and using them as a guide when writing.

In Search of Stuff

We are searching for a variety of “found” materials to use in our room. We would like to implement these materials at our design table. The design table is a place where children use various materials to express their thoughts and ideas through the form of representations. Items such as buttons or small pieces of wood and cardboard would be ideal for children to use at the design table. If you have any materials laying in your junk drawers, we would be happy to take them off your hands!
