The length of most hands-on training sessions was 90 minutes and the roundtable discussions were 60 minutes.

Evaluation

The evaluation instrument has three sections.  The first section allows the Summer Institute participants to identify which training sessions were helpful and which were not helpful.  The next section allows the participant to evaluate the overall instruction of the Summer Institute.  The last section of the evaluation instrument contains six open-ended questions.  The purpose of this section is an effort to obtain feedback about the currently offered training opportunity, as well as to solicit suggestions for future training topics.

Section 3: Open-Ended Questions

The Open-Ended Questions section provides a place for participant feedback asking

    • if  attendees learned what they thought they would,
    • if participation in this training would enhance one’s teaching over the next academic year,
    • if  participation in this training would enable the attendee to integrate technology into instruction,
    • if attendees liked the Summer Institute format,
    • for any suggestions on other training session topics to offer,
    • for an overall evaluation of the training opportunity.

This section is an excellent resource for planning future training opportunities.  Changes that resulted from the June 2002 Summer Institute input included increasing the time frames for hands-on training sessions and repeating certain sessions.

The suggestions for future training session topics included more advanced uses for the TI-83+, a class that provides ideas on making coursework more relevant to the students, repeating the PowerPoint  session, strategies to open discussion in the classroom, how do we learn, Microsoft Outlook Express, and SAA activities in the curriculum.
