Summer Institute June 2002 Evaluative Summary


Objectives and Scope

The 2002 Summer Institute theme was “Enhancing Instruction Through The Use Of Technology.”  The June Summer Institute was aimed at faculty who wanted to learn new technologies and pedagogies to be used to facilitate teaching and learning, in addition to incorporate computer technologies into their teaching. Participants got first-hand experience with new technologies and teaching and learning strategies to use in the classroom.

The Summer Institute, held in June of 2002, had 14 participants.

Format

The two and one-half day schedule started on Wednesday, June 18 and ended at noon on Friday, June 21, 2002  There were 13 training sessions offered.  In this training opportunity, participants could receive up to 15 hours of instruction. There were 6 presenters for the 13 training sessions. The length of  hands-on training sessions varied in length from was 60 to 85 minutes, while the roundtable discussions were 50 minutes. 

Evaluation 

The evaluation instrument has three sections.  The first section allows the Summer Institute participants to identify, which training sessions were helpful and which were not helpful.  The next section allows the participant to evaluate the overall instruction of the Summer Institute.  The last section of the evaluation instrument contains six open-ended questions.  The purpose of this section is an effort to obtain feedback about the currently offered training opportunity, as well as to solicit suggestions for future training topics.

Evaluation of Session Topics That Were Helpful or Not Helpful

100 percent felt that the June 2002 Summer Institute was helpful.

 

Section 2:
Evaluation of Summer Institute Instruction

Attendees were asked to rate the overall instruction that they received when attending the June 2002 Summer Institute session(s).  The rating chart as organized with the following headings: Strongly Agree, Agree, Neither Agree or Disagree, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree.  Using a “five point” scale, with five being the highest, these headings were assigned a point value starting with Strongly Agree with a value of 5.

 

Breakdown of Evaluation Ratings
Attendees rated the overall instruction as 4.63.

Highest rated – 5.00:   “The presenters were open to participant’s input and questions.” 
Lowest rated – 4.40:    “ The pacing of the instruction was just right.” 

Section 3: Open-Ended Questions

The Open-Ended Questions section provides a place for participant feedback asking

 

    • if  attendees learned what they thought they would,
    • if participation in this training would enhance one’s teaching over the next academic year,
    • if  participation in this training would enable the attendee to integrate technology into instruction,
    • if attendees liked the Summer Institute format,
    • for any suggestions on other training session topics to offer,
    • for an overall evaluation of the training opportunity.

 

This section is an excellent resource for planning future training opportunities.  Suggestions for future training sessions include how to develop a PowerPoint for an instructor’s subject, converting websites to the new Liquid Matrix format, and how to deal with difficult students.  One instructor requested a session that would give more hands on with software that can be used for hybrid/DL courses. 

 

The overall evaluation comments about this training opportunity included “great”, “good”, “excellent”, and “adequate”, in addition to requests to continue this type of training.
