Clinical Laboratory Science Technology Major

(This is a joint program with Lorain County Community College.)

The Clinical Laboratory Science Technology program prepares graduates for employment in hospital, urgent care, physicians’ offices, research, and industry laboratory settings. Lorain County Community College has articulation agreements with colleges and universities including programs offered by Lorain County Community College’s University Partnership.

Upon completion of the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLSC) Technology program, each graduate should be able to:

  • Collect and process biological  specimens appropriately for the various departments in the clinical laboratory
  • Perform routine clinical laboratory testing in the Hematology, Immunohematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Immunology/Serology, and Coagulation areas of the clinical laboratory
  • Operate and maintain laboratory instrumentation in the Hematology, Immuno-hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Immunology/Serology, and Coagulation areas of the clinical laboratory
  • Evaluate patient and quality test results, recognizing normal, abnormal, and critical values, and take appropriate follow-up action when necessary
  • Recognize the clinical significance of laboratory results in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
  • Participate in the appropriate aspects of a laboratory quality assurance program
  • Recognize various problems that occur and offer solutions in pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of laboratory testing
  • Demonstrate sufficient use of oral and written communication to meet the needs of the laboratory, and patient care
  • Demonstrate sufficient technical skill in the use of laboratory information systems to meet the needs of the laboratory
  • Demonstrate a professional attitude in appearance, work ethic, and laboratory safety
  • Demonstrate the performance of routine procedures to students or new employees as assigned by their supervisor
  • Successfully pass a National Certification Exam (ASCP or NCA) in Clinical Laboratory Science Technology

Students who expect to continue on for a Baccalaureate degree should consider taking MTH 2310, CHM 1610/1615 and CHM 1620/1625, and consult with a college counselor.

All students graduating from Terra State Community College with an Associate degree of any kind will be functionally proficient in common computer operations and applications. Please see your academic advisor or academic division office for further details.
