Advising for Incoming Students

By working with an academic advisor, Terra State Community College students are able to develop an academic plan that will help them achieve their self-declared goals. At Terra, we believe academic advising is a shared responsibility. Students should be prepared for their advising appointments and follow through with the expectations. Advisors will help you select appropriate courses for your academic program and connect you with campus resources that ensure your success. 

Advising for New Students

New students at Terra are required to meet with an academic advisor in the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services. Incoming students should contact the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services at 419.559.2349 to schedule an appointment with an admissions advisor. Appointments are offered Monday through Friday, both in person and over the telephone. You may schedule an appointment with an admissions advisor after you have been accepted to the College and completed the placement assessment (if necessary).

During advising, you will have the opportunity to:

• Connect with a staff member who wants you to succeed;
• Ensure you are on the right track to finish the enrollment process;
• Review the scores from your placement assessment;
• Discuss your academic and career goals;
• Receive information on relevant student support services that you may wish to take advantage of;
• Verify where you are in the financial aid process;
• Determine appropriate courses to register for during your first semester;
• Register for a CORE (Complete Orientation & Registration Experience) session.

Steps After Advising

Your admissions advisor will assist you in selecting a day and time to attend a CORE session. All incoming students are required to attend CORE, where you will officially register for classes and determine your course schedule using your Student Portal. Readmitting students from the past five years who are exempt from CORE will register for classes at the Registration Help Desk immediately after seeing an admissions advisor.

Continuing Students

The Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services is designed to provide advising services for incoming/new and readmitting students only.  Advising for continuing students is provided by your assigned academic and/or faculty advisor in your program of study. To determine who your assigned advisors are, log in to your Student Portal and click the "My Advisors" link. For additional assistance, continuing students should contact the Academic Service Center at 419.559.2109.
