Commonly Asked Counseling Center Questions
How much does counseling cost?
Counseling is free of charge to all Terra students.
How can I benefit from counseling?
The effect of counseling is hard to predict. Some individuals who receive assistance may feel and function better, some feel worse off, and others may feel and function about the same as when initiating counseling. We hope that you will be better off, of course, and will make every reasonable attempt to assist you with your counseling goals. Students report the following ways they have benefited from counseling:
- Achieve effective coping skills
- Develop better relationships with others
- Improve school and or work performance
- Clarify values and needs
- Feel better about themselves
- Make decisions with respect to short and long term goals
Will my information become part of my academic records?
The information you provide will not be released to any party without your written permission within the limits of the law. Please refer to the confidentiality statement.
Will my instructors, parents, partner, or friends know that I am in counseling?
The information that you discuss in counseling is confidential between you and your counselor. Your instructor will not be aware of your involvement in counseling unless you sign a release of information form requesting that the instructor be notified. Your parents, partner, or friends or others will only know this information if you disclose it to them.
When is a referral made?
If a student desires long-term counseling, a referral can be made to a qualified mental health professional in the immediate area. Referrals can be made at any time during the counseling process. Referrals to additional resources can be made to address many other needs in addition to counseling. It is our goal to help you succeed her at Terra State Community College.
