Constitution Day
Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is observed annually on September 17 to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787 and to recognize
all who have become U.S. citizens. Legislation introduced by Senator Robert C. Byrd and enacted in December 2004 as 36 U.S.C. § 106, requires educational institutions receiving federal funding to provide Constitution
Day educational programming for students on or around September 17 each year. Constitution
Day promotes civic knowledge, encourages informed participation in democracy, reminds
individuals of the importance of exercising the right to vote, and reinforces an understanding
of the Constitution's enduring role in protecting individual rights and shaping American
government.
