Education and internship led to a full-time position with Gordon Lumber as the Assistant Store Manager

When Amanda Shammo graduated from Gibsonburg High School in 2014, she knew that she was going to be attending Terra State Community College in the fall and studying Business Management. Beyond that, she wasn’t sure what the future held. Shammo recalls, “I never had a certain plan. I chose Terra State because its home. It’s local. I could go to school full time and work full time. It was definitely a challenge to take on, but I was prepared for it.”

When Shammo started classes at Terra State, she was a full-time building materials associate at Lowes. To accommodate her schedule, online courses made most sense. “I would study mainly at night, sometimes until two in the morning.” One semester, Shammo took eight classes. “I wanted to get it done and I pushed a lot.”

Shammo also realized that there was much she didn’t learn in high school. “When you go from high school to college, you need to take on responsibility. You need to set your priorities straight.” One priority that Shammo set for herself was to graduate with honors. She did not do it in high school and wanted to make sure she did in college. She attained that goal graduating summa cum laude with a 3.98 grade point average.

Part of Shammo’s coursework was an internship at Gordon Lumber in Fremont where she was able to learn every facet of the business. “My manager said he was going to teach me most of the duties he handled because it would help him out and I would continue to learn everything I needed to know. Right away, I learned about ordering, receiving, supplier returns, inventory and customer service. I even was sent on deliveries.”

Shammo graduated in 2016 with an Associates of Applied Business degree in Business Management. Her education and internship led to a full-time position with Gordon Lumber as the Assistant Store Manager, which is a very proud accomplishment for her. “I never stop pushing myself, I am always motivated to do my best and keep improving day by day. It’s important to me. It goes to show that hard work does pay off and if you have the right mind set, you can accomplish anything!”

When reflecting on her time at Terra State, Shammo says, “You take a lot of what you learn and apply it. Many people wonder why they have to take certain classes because you are never going to use it in life. Well, you do. I never planned on going to college, but I knew it would be an important impact on my future. The affordability of Terra State and its location made it worth it. Plus, at Terra State, your professors care. You aren’t just a number to them.”
