The 2019 Great Lakes Regional Cisco Academy Conference will be hosted on the Terra State Community College Fremont campus April 11-12 where attendees can network and learn about cybersecurity, programming, the Internet of things, Packet Tracer and operating systems.

The conference is Thursday, April 11 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Friday, April 12 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. There will be breakout sessions covering a wide variety of topics, like automotive cybersecurity, coding labs, Wireshark tips and tricks and more. Many speakers will also be presenting, including the Founder of Chappell University Laura Chappell who is also an author of numerous industry titles on network analysis, troubleshooting and security.

Terra State Associate Professor Haley Crabtree is one of many who have benefited from conferences like these. “Instructors get new teaching techniques, new curriculum, ideas on new equipment and curriculum for that equipment,” she said.

Cisco Academy provides educational and technical training and career mentorships to people around the world. Any academy certified instructor can get free courses from Cisco Academy that they can teach to their students.

Terra State is one institution that offers these courses to students because it is a National Center of Excellence in Cyber Defense. “The courses that Cisco and Terra State offer are linked to industry level certifications,” Crabtree said.

Crabtree expressed the importance of training instructors to teach these courses so students can be ready to enter the workforce. “When students go out into the field, they’ll always have questions like, ‘do you have Cisco experience? Have you gone through the Cisco curriculum? Do you know how to use the equipment?’” she said. “Cisco trainings not only teach you about all of that, but they also teach you how a network works, how to set up networks and wireless networks, how to secure your wireless network and more.”
