Terra State offers scholarships to DECA award winners
Almost 20 high school students were awarded scholarships to Terra State Community College at the Independent Association (IA) DECA competition held Monday.
According to the DECA website, “DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.”
Over 100 high school students from EHOVE Career Center, Fostoria High School, Clay High School and Port Clinton High School visited Terra State to compete in the IA DECA competition. Michele Hollister, a marketing teacher at Fostoria High School and a DECA competition organizer, explained that students were given a business case study that contained a typical problem that businesses face. Individuals or teams then presented their ideas to judges, which consisted of local business people.
After a morning of competition and campus tours, 17 students won first place and were each awarded a $500 Terra State scholarship on behalf of the Terra College Foundation.
Hollister is happy students were awarded scholarships. “Anything that assists students with their college debt is great,” she said. “A scholarship may help sway their decision to begin with a community college and then move on to a four-year institution if their career choice requires it.”
Executive Director of the Terra College Foundation Cory Stine said, “It was a pleasure having the DECA participants at Terra State. It’s wonderful to see future business professionals participating in competitions focusing on real-world issues.”
