Terra State Community College student Tatiyana Welch has been named the College’s Fremont Rotary Student of the Month for December 2020.

Welch resides in Fremont and graduated from Fremont Ross High School and Vanguard-Sentinel Career & Technology Centers in 2016. She is working towards an Associate of Arts degree, focusing her classes in education.

Welch credits Terra State for finding her and seeing her potential to succeed.

“I found myself stuck in-between options. I didn’t know what to do,” said Welch, “It’s not like I had to fit their box but more like everything that made up Terra State Community College molded itself to fit my mindset and to set me up with the best possibilities I could have.”

Outside of classes, Welch works as a student front desk attendant with Campus Security, where she monitors the sign in and out process at entrances. She has recently volunteered as a poll worker during the election, helping with park clean up, assisting children during pumpkin picking, and is a part of a writing mentorship program.

Her nominator Ann Sergent, dean of the liberal arts and business division, credits Welch for persevering through difficult times and sticking to her goals.

“Tatiyana is a dedicated caring student.  She has overcome many obstacles to get where she is today. I am proud of what she has accomplished and I know she is going to be an amazing teacher,” said Sergent.

Welch is grateful for the support her family and mentors have shown her.

“To my mom, Dawn: you have done a fantastic job, and to my siblings: Sen’eca, Aquisha, and Phadrez, with a little motivation to lead you, you will find yourself invincible,” said Welch, “To the students and faculty that may come across this: you only lose when you stop trying. To Mrs. Sergent: the hope you gave me each time, left a mark that will stay with me forever, for that I thank you.”

After graduation in May of 2021, Welch will move on to complete her bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution and become certified in TEFL/TESOL (teaching English as a foreign language) through the TEFL Academy. She will train and teach in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
