Terra State Community College student Barbarita Martinez has been named the College’s Fremont Rotary Student of the Month for September.

Martinez lives in Fremont with her husband, Victor, and three children, Victor Martinez Jr., Alberto and Analiah.

She previously graduated from Fremont Ross High School in 2005. Now at Terra State, she is taking classes to earn her Registered Nurse Degree.

Martinez said she chose Terra State because “it was the closest to home where I could balance school and life. I am grateful that the College offers day-time classes where I have the time to spend the evenings going to my children’s activities.”

Aside from classes, Martinez is a part of the Student Nurses’ Association (SNA) and volunteers with trash pick-up and at the flu clinic. Also, she tries to be involved in her children’s school and extracurricular activities as much as possible. Her two sons play soccer, and her daughter does gymnastics.

Her nominator Meghan Rich, a nursing instructor, chose to nominate Martinez because while at a community event, a nurse preceptor mentioned what a wonderful student Barbarita was during her precepting experience and how she believes she will make an excellent nurse.

"Barbarita is an exceptional nursing student who deserves to be recognized for her dedication to her nursing education as well as representing herself and Terra State so positively at her preceptor site,” Rich said.

“I want to become a nurse to care for and help people. I really enjoy the one-on-one patient care and clinical. After graduating from high school, I wanted to earn my nursing degree; however, I decided to work at a doctor’s office instead. With the love and support from my  husband and three wonderful children, I decided to pursue my dream of nursing and came to Terra State,” said Martinez.

After graduation in December of 2021, Martinez wants to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and find a job in nursing in Fremont.
