Fremont, Ohio, October 4, 2023 – Terra State Community College was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Ohio Board of Nursing’s Nurse Education Grant Program (NEGP) to help support the expansion of classes in the school’s nursing program
and the acquisition of educational equipment.

Recognizing the need for nursing classes that are more accessible to working adults and nontraditional students, Terra State plans to use the grant to start a part time evening cohort, which would provide an option for those who wish to pursue an RN degree but need to do so outside of other commitments such as holding a full-time day job and/or caring for family and children.

“Nursing is a high-demand field right now and there are many excellent opportunities for someone with an RN degree, but taking a full-time nursing course load isn’t realistic for everyone,” said Ann Sergent, Dean of Liberal Arts, Business and Allied Health at Terra State. “Our goal is to train more nurses for Ohio, and thanks to the NEGP award we’ll be able to provide more learning opportunities for students from all walks of life.”

According to Sergent, graduates of Terra State’s nursing program are finding great jobs providing care in area hospitals, physicians’ offices, emergency rooms and nursing homes, as well as home care and travel nursing.

Nursing degrees offered at Terra State include an RN Degree, an LPN to RN Degree, and a 1-2-1 Nursing BSN Pathway. Additionally, Terra State’s nursing program graduates may also go on to a four-year university to pursue a BSN or MS degree.

Terra State is committed to training Northwest Ohio’s next generation of nurses and care providers. For its nursing program clinical rotations, Terra State partners with local area hospitals and health systems including Bellevue Hospital, Firelands Regional Medical Center, Fisher-Titus Medical Center, and Magruder Hospital.

Through the NEGP, the Ohio Board of Nursing awards funding to nursing education programs that partner with healthcare facilities, community health agencies or patient-centered medical homes to increase their nursing student enrollment capacity. Grants may be used to fund clinical faculty, instructional personnel, purchase educational equipment and other approved activities. Terra State’s grant was awarded for a two-year cycle beginning November 1, 2023, and ending October 31, 2025.
