Can you imagine a career where you get to manage brands like Coors Light, Miller Lite, Blue Moon, Leinenkugel’s, REDD’s and George Killian’s as well as work with companies like Ghirardelli Chocolates, Coca-Cola and Kellogg’s Snacks? Well, alumna Darlene Morisco is doing just that in her career working on the MillerCoors Team as the Account Supervisor for Collaborative Marketing Group in Chicago, IL.

When Morisco was a student at Whitmer High School in Toledo, one of her commercial arts teachers told her about the Graphic Design program at Terra State Community College. After hearing praise from him and finding out some of her friends would also be attending Terra State, she decided to enroll.

She enjoyed learning and her favorite professor was Ron Neeley, who taught her commercial art class. One of her fondest memories was during her final exam for one of her classes was a joke that you would have only gotten if you read all of the directions in the exam first. She was the only one in her class who caught the joke. “The bottom of the page said, ‘you don’t actually need to do this exam. Have a great summer!

Congratulations,’” she said. Morisco valued the friends she had at the College and still thinks about some of the memories they shared, like sledding during the winter months.”

In May 1985, Morisco graduated with a business degree in Graphic and Marketing Communications. After that, she held a few different jobs that helped grow her skillsets and widen her experience. One of her favorites was working as the Creative Services Manager at Continental Distributing Co., which, at the time, was Chicago’s largest wine and liquor distributor. She got to travel to hotels to design wine displays among many other enjoyable tasks.

Now, working on the MillerCoors Team as the Account Supervisor for Collaborative Marketing Group, she gets to do all kinds of projects she loves. “I love getting the chance to work with our partners and working on promotions from start to finish. My job is never boring,” she said. She develops and tracks all Joint Promotional Agreements between MillerCoors and their partners, manages all Walmart/Sam’s, Drug Channel (CVS, Rite-Aid and Walgreen’s), Publix and much more.

Morisco is thankful the education she got at Terra State helped prepare her for an amazing career. “What I learned at Terra State was basically a deep dive into what was needed to obtain the jobs I got into once I graduated,” she said. “Because there weren’t any Gen Eds required, I could really focus on what I wanted to do.”

It’s not all work for Morisco. In her free time, she enjoys volunteering at Senior Services Associates, leading her high school class reunion committee, and working with her husband to remodel their home. “He’s very handy and I have the designer eye,” she explained.

She left us with some advice: “Have fun and be passionate about what you’re learning. Also, make sure you utilize the counselors to help you because they will help you get a career after you graduate.”
